From My Kitchen
Growing up in a Greek immigrant family, fresh ingredients were simply a way of life. Like many Greek families, my parents devoted a large portion of our backyard to a vegetable garden. Every summer we enjoyed homegrown tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, and fresh herbs. Those early memories taught me that simple ingredients often make the best meals.
Today, although life with four children is much busier than it used to be, I still try to buy local whenever possible. Visiting local farm markets is one of my favorite ways to support our community while bringing home the freshest ingredients available. This particular version was made using locally raised ground beef and a locally produced pasta sauce (Brad’s Farm Market in Churchville, MD), but don’t worry—your favorite ground beef and jarred pasta sauce work beautifully too.
Sometimes the simplest dinners become the ones your family asks for again and again, and this Easy Penne with Meat Sauce is definitely one of those meals in our house.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Easy Penne with Meat Sauce
Ground Beef
I like using lean ground beef because it creates a rich, flavorful meat sauce without becoming overly greasy. Ground turkey or Italian sausage are excellent substitutions if you’d like a lighter or heartier version.
Penne Pasta
Penne is my favorite pasta for this recipe because the ridges help hold onto every bit of the meat sauce. Rigatoni, rotini, ziti, or even spaghetti also work well.
Pasta Sauce
A quality jarred spaghetti sauce makes this recipe incredibly quick and convenient. Look for one made with simple ingredients, or substitute your favorite homemade marinara sauce.
Olive Oil
A little olive oil helps brown the beef while adding richness to the finished sauce.
Parmesan Cheese
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese adds the perfect finishing touch. Its nutty, salty flavor pairs beautifully with the rich meat sauce.
Salt and Pepper
Season to taste after the sauce has simmered. Depending on your pasta sauce, you may not need very much additional salt.
How to Make Easy Penne with Meat Sauce
Step 1: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil. Cook the penne according to the package directions until al dente. Before draining, reserve about ½ cup of the pasta cooking water.
Drain the pasta and return it to the pot. Drizzle with a small amount of olive oil and toss gently to prevent sticking while you finish the sauce.
Step 2: Brown the Beef
Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small crumbles with a wooden spoon, until it is browned and no pink remains, about 6–8 minutes.
If necessary, drain any excess grease.

Step 3: Make the Sauce
Pour the spaghetti sauce into the skillet with the browned beef.
Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together beautifully.
If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a splash of the reserved pasta water.

Step 4: Combine
Add the cooked penne directly to the sauce and gently toss until every piece of pasta is coated.
Serve immediately with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and freshly cracked black pepper.

Vayia’s Tips
- Salt your pasta water generously—it should taste like the sea.
- Don’t overcook the pasta. Al dente pasta holds up much better when mixed with the sauce.
- Reserve some pasta water before draining. It’s the secret to creating a silky sauce.
- Freshly grated Parmesan melts much better than pre-shredded cheese.
- For extra flavor, stir in a handful of chopped fresh basil or parsley just before serving.
- Pair this meal with a crisp Greek salad and warm garlic bread for a complete dinner.
P.S. For those who are interested in a low carb meal, pair the Meat Sauce with a baked sweet potato, zoodles, or cauliflower rice.
What to Serve with Penne and Meat Sauce
This hearty pasta pairs wonderfully with:
- Traditional Greek Salad
- Caesar Salad
- Garlic Bread
- Roasted Broccoli
- Steamed Green Beans
- Roasted Brussels Sprouts
For dessert, finish the meal with fresh strawberries or one of your favorite Greek pastries, like Baklava.
Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water to loosen the sauce.
Can You Freeze It?
Absolutely.
Allow the meat sauce to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers.
Frequently Asked Questions

Recipe Notes
- Use freshly grated Parmesan whenever possible.
- Simmering the sauce for 20 minutes develops a richer flavor.
- Don’t rinse the cooked pasta—the starch helps the sauce cling to every bite.
- Leftover meat sauce is delicious over baked potatoes, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, or cauliflower rice.
Sometimes the best recipes aren’t the most complicated—they’re the ones that bring everyone to the dinner table with smiles and empty plates. This Easy Penne with Meat Sauce has become one of our family’s favorite weeknight meals because it’s simple, comforting, and always dependable.
